Is AI used to create VNs a good or bad thing?

A real double-edged sword this! Using AI could make creating VNs much easier; the more often it is used, the more adept it become in helping the creation process. This is a plus point to anyone with good story ideas, but little-to-no experience in the complexities of Ren'py, Unity, etc. However, the use of AI to, for example, improve graphics could cause major problems. Renders and shadow accuracy are already making what are ostensibly cartoons into very realistic-looking characters - realistic enough to have the censorship brigade foaming at the mouth. With AI though, that level of realism could easily be taken to dangerous levels; dangerous enough for it to become difficult/impossible to differentiate between created artwork and real photos of real people (deepfakes are already there). Now let's take this to the next stage: animation, or worse still, animation involving chars who look young.......you can all get where I'm heading here.

I'm genuinely concerned where this potential censorship nightmare could be heading.......Any comments or observations??

Depends on the writing and the consistency of the images.

As with anything, if done well then it's good, if done poorly then it will be bad

When you are a solo dev that is good at programming but completely suck at drawing stuff, or making renders, and you do not want involve another person, that might be a risk, because when that person gets sick your project might get stuck because of that, then a AI might be a better solution and a helpful tool.

So far there were way too few ai generated images that really impressed me.
The most ai images have huge problems with toes, fingers and nipples. Also there are problems with clipping and fading clothes into the skin and so on.
All in all it kills the immersion and i generally don't like them. Maybe in a few years ...

Difficult topic to be honest. If it's good made and constant models its okay to use.

But... remember the "little witch academy" incident.

Its typically gonna be done poorly because people who actually want to put effort into their stuff will just put forth the effort to find art that's actually good.
I've also literally never seen AI writing that isn't completely inhuman and boring

I've obviously been living under a rock for the last couple of years  Could you fill me in on the "little witch academy" incident.

Its early in development, but that little witch academy game looks good, and it uses ai art.

Im of the belief that AI should only be used to help writing, and even then it shouldnt be used for an entire script. I've used AI to help me create characters and lay out settings for places in DnD campaigns, and even then it can be a little rough without proofreading. Images and models though? I think AI still needs a lot of cooking before that's close to being ready to use.

Depending on the story and "drawings"

I never understood the argument of ai killing the immersion. Why would ai generated be different from fictional images generated with the help of other tools / frameworks? It's all fantasy after all. In the end it's just a different style, a means to an end, a tool to deliver a story

Maybe you didn't read my post but again for you: many things are physically wrong in ai pictures. If distorted hands and feet don't kill your immersion then you are on another level.

Again, look at many games with anime style, such as over proportional big heads or eyes. Completely unrealistic as well. Same for any HS models or hand drawn characters. None of them are realistic. Where is the difference with ai?

I think first there is a difference between unrealistic scenarios and plain distorted features. Even in drawings the artists think of details and put effort in making it seem to be consistent.
Also ai is thought to be realistic especially with deep fake pictures, but so far it's more often for amputee kind of fetish.
Maybe if you don't look to close ai can fool you but i've seen it and i can't unsee it.

Ok, I think I understand. You don't like the claim of AI generated images to be realistic. That's fine and I agree. I also think that ai generated images need to be heavily post processed to be used in games. In that regard they are just like rendered or otherwise created images. Using raw ai images is certainly not nice. Using them without effort is equally bad as using badly drawn images, which is what I wanted to emphasize

I'm not a huge fan and think they can look a bit samey.
I think some AI art looks incredibly hot but I have no idea how consistent you can keep it for a whole game. Not just the quality but changes in style and such.
No matter how anyone feels about it, it's going to improve by leaps and bounds in the coming years.

Hey if the AI is consistent with its work, then I got no problem with it

That defys the use of ai from the start.
Therefore ai has way to go to be on equal terms with artists using daz or even hs.
