Apparently at fuck95 they insist a kinetic novel (where there are NO choices) is a game, because you can go through it slowly or quickly. So I guess according to them a book is a game (as you can read carefully/go back or skin) and so is a movie (you can watch at normal speed, go back or fast forward.) Do you think they are games?

You are quite right. I would suggest that Non- Interactive Visual Novel is a better term. "Kinetic" does not really explain much, for me at laest

True. I just don't see how something that has no user input, one ending no matter what and nothing you do changes anything could POSSIBLY be considered a game. For something to be a game, for me at least, implies you have input into how it goes (or whoever is playing does.) Otherwise almost anything, like watching TV, could be considered a game. Would be strange to consider a KN a game, but not a regular book just because one is on a screen (but so is an e-book.) And also very weird to consider just reading a game, regardless of media type.

I don't consider them a game, it's more of a video (movie) you can pause, rewind or fast forward faster but all you do is watch, considering it a game because you press 1 button to advance is ridiculous

Yeah, I don't consider kinetic novels to be games. There is no real interactivity there. I don't see why anyone would even consider them games, or why it would matter. There are plenty of great kinetic novels, they are the quintessential visual novel, as in a novel with visuals (and possibly sounds).

This just seems like a debate over semantics. Does it really matter? Choose your own adventure books exist, are those games?

Yes, as there are choices.

Yes, as there are choices.
What about VNs that just provide the illusion of choice? Plenty of games just give you different dialogue options but none have any really meaning. Or games that the only choice you make is a binary"do you want to have sex?"

Iffy. It's pointless to have it if the same thing happens no matter what the choice. But if there is absolutely no choice at all but "go to next" it's certainly not a game.

It gets into "colloquial misnomer" domain. It is NOT a game, but is called a game.

There are SO MANY words "we" use incorrectly or that have situational definitions. One of the best lessons I have learned is to let these go... you just drive yourself crazy trying to control the way people use words.

That said, I voted for them as a game, but do not feel they are. Does that make sense?

If you can't influence anything but speed, you can't call it a game. Otherwise a movie would also be a game...

I'm going to have to go against the grain and say that kinetic novels are games but are only classified as such due to being granted an honorary category much like how people sometimes get honorary degrees from colleges. Doesn't really mean much and definitely doesn't meet the normal qualifications, but is included anyways for the sake of grouping.

They are not, but I understand packaging them in a engine as Ren'py make them suitable for a game site aggregator.

Kinetic Novel just a slide show with no interaction, so no.

No it's not. Simple as that. A game, as the implies, mean some sort of involvement in decisions that unfold different path and lead to different ending. A novel is, guess what, a novel. Do you have choices in a book? No you don't, that's why they're called books and not games.

Never read a Choose Your Own Adventure book? Some books do have choices.

Yes, exactly they're adventure books. Physically a book, with pages, but not strictly speaking a book with a story from an author. Anyway, you still don't have choices in a kinetic novel...

Hmm, quoting isnt working for me...

anyway. These things are not novels either. What if these have voice-acting and no written dialogue? Still a novel or is it a movie now?
