As you read in the title, I would like to create a Ren'Py game. Do you think it's difficult? Has anyone tried it? I would like to know your experience with this.

Seriously tho, you need an artist or the ability to create art yourself, you need to write plot and dialogue, and you need to program the game itself. Renpy makes the programing part easy if you just go with basic features. If you can do art you are a lot of the way there, but if you can't you need to find some way to get it. HTML games solve this by using real porn clips but AI offers a solution that some are taking up at the moment

It's very possible to start from nothing. ShinyDevon, when they started One Summer in Loliwood, had 0 game dev, programming, and daz3d experience.

It depends on several things, the most important is how much spare time you have and are willing to invest. When I release a 10-15 minute playtime update for a game, I usually spent around 40-60 hours between writing, programming, creating images, and all that. That's just raw work, that doesn't include the time I let my GPU render images overnight. And I've been doing this for nearly 4 years.

Next is monetary requirements. If you don't have a decent NVidia graphics card, you aren't going to be able to use daz to make images, which is what most visual novels in this space use. That doesn't mean you can't make a game though, you could explore a text game using a tool like Twine instead.

You could use another game like Koikatsu to make images as well. Lower barrier to entry and won't take as long to start producing okay content.

From there it's come up with what you want and just start tackling problems one at a time. Start small, it's easy to get very overwhelmed with pie in the sky over-complicated systems.

I'm guessing you know how to code for saying this?

If you really want to do it, start small, don't burn out

Keep in mind that people like a game, so if you give players the option to make choices, they should change the outcome. And that also directly poses the challenge, how to keep your game from branching wildly in all possible directions so you don't end up having to render for 50+ different storylines while a player might only see one of those.

that is good advice

While not entirely true, since 3Delight is still a thing, you would mostly be limited on the quality of the models and environments since you would need to use all older stuff that actually has the 3Delight shaders, or make/add your own. Even the Filament renderer is a possibility, although it is, IMHO, more trouble than it is worth to adjust all the shaders that need changed to get a decent picture out of it, and frequently requires a lot more post-work than you would need with a native I-Ray render.

So the fact you want to create a "game" is probably the biggest sign you shouldn't be looking at Ren'Py. Ren'Py is a good tool for creating visual novels but it's a shit tool for making a 'game'. So the real question is do you have a story you want to tell? Because the best VNs are trying to tell a story.. doesn't have to be The Hobbit but it has to be something of substance beyond 'Male with big dick gets all the girls'.

So.. basically.. you need an Nvidia card :D And more importantly you need a GOOD one with at least 6 GB of VRAM but more is definitely preferable unless you want to be spending a ton of time in post-work mixing multiple renders togther into a single image.

just here to wish you good luck on your journey.
do your research, start small and simple, refine, revise, edit, be open to constructive criticism, keep learning, and have fun.

Renpy is incredibly easy to use. Lots of tutorials and tools out there to make a standard VN. However, if you want to make anything more advanced, you'll have to look into learning python.
And like some others have said, what game are you planning on making? As for difficulty, all depends on the effort you're willing to put in.
I've been working part-time on my own game for close to 2 and a half years, so keep in mind that it might take an incredibly long time before you can put stuff out there.

I second the idea of "good for you" and to make a for sure plan. If you have a story plot, then try to write it out on a storyboard type format. If you have animations and need a story, then posting for ideas can help.

The biggest failure is losing enthusiasm for a project due to either insufficient resources, skills/knowledge, or funding. If you can't work in a team and don't have all the needed skills, then time is all you have on your side, if that.

Good luck.

Making a crappy game visual novel is easy. Making decent to good one though is a whole other story that requires a lot of time and effort.

I haven't heard that name in years, still active somewhere?

At that point, I'd just learn blender if you have an AMD card.

Not afaik, I haven't chatted with them in a bit, I think real life's got them pretty slammed.

Like you I would like to try making a VN but I am not artistic

I would love to create my own game but wouldn't know where to start.

From what I've gathered.
You can bypass no programming knowledge with making a game in RPG Maker.
You can bypass no DAZ/3D knowledge with using 3d erotic games like Honey Select.
Getting those off the table can help you focus on making a game.
