Basically, yes.
It's "keep your own pace".

The first two goals are to get some better materials to craft stuff and get more NPCs (you need houses for them).
At some point the first boss will show up (when you have a certain number of NPCs), you can also spawn it by using an item.
Beat the other bosses and get accessiories that help you with progressing the game.

If you are ready you need to unlock "hard mode" by defeating the "Wall of Flesh" in the hell layer (at the very bottom of the map), be carefull, you may trigger it by accident, because it gets summoned by throwing an item in the lava that gets droppend by one of the mobs down there.

After the boss is defeted the "hard mode" is unlocked, everywhere new and harder mobs spawn, new bosses are fightable, new events, new metals spawn, a new biome spawns too and the corruption/crimson will slowly spread.

You can look here if you need more information:

Actually, you should look there, because there is much stuff that's not told in the game.

great game, but sadly the only way to really get information on how to progress is through the wiki or guides, not much info in game. take your time though, fuck around, explore, have fun

I think it' like 2D Minecraft. Gather resourses, craft weapons and equipment, and explore more dangerous areas. Rinse and repeat.
I really liked playing it in multiplayer.

Great game. Welcome to a throwback of a throwback!

Terreria gives me the worst nightmares of any game I have ever played. The music and the fast side scrolling give me those wierd repetetive dreams where I get stuck in a fast loop.

To progress, mainly go mining, build some houses, and talk to the guide npc for various tips.
The inventory UI also has a button to help you determine a valid house.
There are lots of npcs, so try to have an empty one ready (some require an empty house to spawn).

Its similar to minecraft, but with a much clearer focus on combat progression (beat boss, craft new gear, fight in harder zone, beat next boss, etc.)
Hell of a game though!

Mine, kill bosses, build farms, kill more mobs, basically if you kill enough of anything you'll get better gear and resources you can use to craft better items and progress to kill more bosses. Plus there's a ton of cosmetic items.

Perhaps consult guides regarding ideal conditions for summoning certain bosses in the right order.

That said, its been at least 5 years since I dug deep in Terraria.... but I did dig deep before....
