I get that it cost money to run a site. I would be mo willing to pitch in money wise if nothing was locked behind a paywall. So how does grinding help?

Afaik the main reason for the coin system is to lock controversial content behind a wall of trust. There were issues of reporting to the site's host. It's been discussed a lot, just look at this thread

Grinding makes sure the usual users aren't bots, and gives us chance to all interact.
However, I presume people who end up buying Lewdcoin keep the site afloat, so those impatient folks. I salute you!

this is done to hide controversial content from the eyes of everyone who comes in, so that if anything happens, the site does not get into some kind of scandal and is not blocked
