Have you tried creating your own game and failed? Why?

Just want to know if any of you have started creating your own game and after a while, before a proper release stopped making it.
And if you have, what was the reason for stopping.

I've tried making a game some years ago with SugarCube. Had a whole plan, mapped it all out, got a lot of image resources. Then after a while I realized it was too ambitious and I could not create in a quality I wanted it, so I lost motivation. Also, private life got in the way.

Creative work is always challenging. Especially starting out, your expectations will always be way higher than your ability, but you've just kinda gotta keep pushing on, because you'll never get better without putting in the effort.

Personally, I write all the time, but that writing never often leaves my personal control. I think it may be an exercise of getting the thoughts out of my head, but I've rarely felt the need to share that writing with the world.

A long time ago I made a successful game. I was making the sequel but I kinda did it the old fashioned way: took several years away to work on it, no patreon or subscribe star, with intent to charge for access, like a mainstream title.

Ran into some family tragedy, needed to take time away. I released an early cut of the game for fans. I didn't know about sites like this and Fuck95. It was instantly uploaded everywhere. Realized my business model was obsolete and my years of work were a waste. Just quit on realizing that

Writing is easy for me, but the art part is difficult, I do not know how to make 3d images and I cannot draw, so making such a game has always been only a dream.

it may be controversial take, but did you consider AI to create art? I know many people dont like AI art, but I personaly think AI is the future for adult games. People like you (and me maybe) who have ideas and who (thanks to years of fapping experience) know what a good adult game should be like, could use this experience and make great games, if only someone would make art for them, and fast , and free... and this is where AI will help.

I personally think the biggest issue with AI art, is the amount of "sameness" that goes into most of the artwork. I love writing, but posing in honey select or similar games drain my soul. I hope a lewd AI generator will come out which will allow for heavier self-input influences to correct it. I'm hopeful because I also want to create.
But then we get also have to get into the technicalities of copyright.. And that's another soul draining adventure.

I'm too damned ADHD; besides the programming I'd have to learn the biggest challenge would be keeping it updated - especially with the stress of expectations.

yea I know what you mean, like a tool that let you pose simple 3d models and tag them as characters and then AI would take that and generate images with proper characters in the same poses you choosed. This way we would be able to generate whole scenes instead of same generic poses AI is doing right now.

I think when AI gets to that point it'll just create it's own VNs, just like many online articles are AI generated already.

I've never tried making my own game besides running all sorts of DnD events ;)

I've always wanted to make a porn game but I'm not good at a lot of the tedious parts like coding. I've played so many of these games for so many years now that I do believe I could make a top game (then again I believe everyone thinks they can until they try, saying something and doing it are completely different).

Well now I think about it, I tried learning one of the visual novel software but my brain got distracted too easily.

As of right now, I think something does exist that touch upon what you wish for. But AFAIK It's still severely limited. Having a design remembered, and giving written/drawn instructions for posing should be possible on some existing engine. But It still suffers from being copy-paste aesthetics.
Populating scenery and background for consistency is also another caveat. We'll get there eventually, but for now we just have to hope and dream.
I hope one day we will live in a world where literary creativity alone will enough to create degenerate AVNs. It has to be soon or never, regulators would absolutely love to mess with it.

If you think your writing is good and would make an interesting game, you could look for people who are good with rendering/posing or just art and collaborate with them. Worth giving it a try, if you can see yourself doing it. You can start small, make a comic, and if it's good and well received you can start making a game.

Thank you for the idea, I do not have a powerful enough graphic card to use the kind of AI tools that you need to use for such games. Public AI tools would not work for these kinds of games I think!

I think it's crazy how people are using AI. I need AI to do my laundry and dishes. But instead it's creating art for me instead...Shouldn't AI be the opposite, and do the tasks that I don't want to do, and leave the stuff that's fun for me. But instead, we're using AI to create art, meanwhile, I have a sink full of dishes.

I hate to break it to you bro but that's called a dishwasher, you don't need AI for that.

You still got to rinse the dishes! You can't just throw a plate that's full of spaghetti and sauce in there, you'll clog the drain in no time. So instead, I have to rinse the dishes, and then place it in the dishwasher. You think I got time for that, I'm trying to fap!

I've made an attempt at a web-rpg, which turned out to be one gigantic SQL hell.
I've explored RPGmaker, way, waaay back. Which was a lot of work for very little payout, though I might have a look back at it.
I've done some tiny RenPy edits, which seemed doable, especially since I've dabbled more in Python.
Aside from that I considered doing a gamedev course, but ultimately didn't.
And I'm doing TTRPG game mastering, which is sorta similar.

In short, time and focus are the reasons I gave up

I had a plan worked out for what I wanted to make, but when I started working on the creation of the 3D models I realized that I got bored of the work too easily and with the little time I'd end up spending nearly a year to create a 0.1, let alone whatever time would be required to create updates afterwards if my attention span even allowed me to get that

Ultimately I figured it just wasn't going to be a worthwhile use of my time and ended up scrapping the whole thing

I know that just too well. Every now and then I still play with the thought of making a game, but then I realize it would be way too much effort and would take a lot longer, than I could keep up the momentum.
And that's why I have so much respect for devs who keep developing, updating their game consistently. From a player perspective it is sad to wait 2-3-4 months for a game which first appeared 2 or 3 years ago. But when you look at it from the other side, that man (or woman) is continuously and consistently working on a thing I would have given up after half a year. That's why Moonbox, Voidpilgrim, QuadrupleQ, k4soft and many others I don't even know are so amazing people.

i have more times than i care to remember. nothing i have released public.
most notable i had a rpg i had made from scratch(wrote a engine, made art assets in photoshop cs3(before they buggered up the ui and added a ton of bs features that don't belong), and even got some decent bgm/soundeffects off a forum i was on then). i worked on it during my time in highschool(was so bored with the stupid teachers and their "o you're bored with my lesson. here have even more homework with my boring asf subject"). it would take quite a bit of time to complete(game had 20 areas with bosses.) several of the bosses could be defeated without fighting them(had a op mech one that could be defeated by simply destroying the reactor the powered the wireless charging system for it). after i had lost the hdd it was on and the backups were a few months out of date on my progress i abandoned it.
