Game Updates

How do I update a game that I have already downloaded and played? For example:

I've played game XYZ v0.01
Now v0.02 is out

Do I just download the new v0.02 file and play it? Do I delete my old v0.01 folder? Or is there a shorter way to just download the update itself?

Many devs provide two types of update: one which includes all previous updates (can be quite a large file, especially if near the end of the VN), or an update that tags onto the end of the version that you already have. This will usually be a much smaller file as it won't include and earlier updates.
