Do you think the quality of story telling has dropped?

There was a time when VNs use to tell fun stories. Now games take forever to update so you completely loose track.

Which games still have a good story and regular updates??

There are many games with horrible stories out there. Quality is a fleeting thing now a days.

I like Eternum and Ripples. Harem Hotel and I love Hero guild harem. But the last one gets very few updates.

i think good story games are still there, but they are just lost in hundreds of trash clones, People see money that succsessfull games make and they try to make game themselves, 99% are abandoned or total trash.

I don't think the quality has dropped very much, but good, consistent, and captivating story telling has always been the exception. Making a story that fits your characters, and keeping that quality across the entire game, is hard work, and most devs are not up to in the long run.

I can't agree that quality has declined. It's just that a simple rule always applies: 90% of projects are slag, 9% are just not bad and 1% are very good projects. This law has always been in effect and not only for AVN. It applies to cinema, literature, and painting.

I think there are still some good games with great stories out there. Sometimes they don't always start out as great, but they build there over time. There are some great games with great stories but people get pissed that they don't have tons of options, or they can't do this or that in the game, maybe it has a tag you don't like. I think the bigger issue is how quickly games are trashed by players which has a negative impact on the devs. Which is why I feel sometimes devs take the easy route and just make it a fuck fest, or just abandon the games. Then you have the people that think they can make something better or they will make a ton of money off their game and don't. Making a game is easy, but making a good one is very difficult now days.

Development time takes longer now too with higher-quality models, there are a lot of developers that are doing their project solo as a side project since they have a full-time job. We live in this I want it now mentality which is good in some parts but bad in others. You want projects out faster that impacts quality or writing.

Sorry, I forgot to recommend some games with good stories. Maybe check out Artemis, Chasing Sunsets, Summers Gone (haven't played in a while but I enjoyed what I saw), City of Broken Dreamers, and Ripples, to name a few.

If you want to try something a little different give mine a shot. My fan based say I have a great story, I do update the game about every 2 months. Sure it has some issues (ugh chapter 1 and my word vomit), but things improved as I learned more things in Daz.

Yup, well said. Maybe OP feels quality is down because there are more AVNs being made then there were a few years ago

Most of the VN games now have horrible story and writing, even worse with localizers pushing their narratives. Like at this point even gacha games have better story, still horrible writing but overall story when you look at it. Now that I think about it I think it applies to all media, its been nearly a decade since I actually went and looked for a movie to watch and as I was scrolling I noticed I keep seeing the same stuff, like how are there more than a dozen of movies about sharks that doesn't make sense.

It is true but not entirely, before the animations, images and even the weight of the files were more complex to manage so they opted for better stories, nowadays a good image appeals to the public easier but I don't think it would get that much worse, it's just that there are already more things to do with the same time. Additionally, the number of projects that appear has increased quite a lot in an attempt to earn easy money without much effort.

In any medium, most of it is trash. This has been true since the beginning of storytelling. I imagine early humans sitting around campfires lamented the lack of good stories, how things were better way back when.

So it's not like story telling has declined in quality, as such. The market has been saturated, bringing with it so much dross the good stuff is harder to find. The extremely low barrier for entry means a lot of people with little skill or passion can try their hand. It is good in that those who do stick with it and care will get better, but it also means there are a lot of low effort stuff out there.

There are some well written games out there still. I usually filter by average ratings/reviews first and look through those first. Most brand-new games are released with the minimum amount of content but with an idea or objective so that they can build up support through the process. Although the side effect of this is often games end up without any real story.

I believe that the quality of storytelling has declined, not primarily because of the writing itself, but rather due to the influx of games that recycle assets or are blatant clones, created solely for quick revenue generation. As a consequence, there's less emphasis placed on crafting good narratives, resulting in a diluted market

Edit: Forgot to mention a game. Mythic Manor is fairly decent that is still updated.

I dont think it has declined... I am not sure it was ever there.

About 10% I play have better-than-average stories or what I would call, "good" stories. But, annecdotally, thats beent he same % for the 4yrs I hae been playing these type games.

Too many people making a game for a quick buck now. Most don't seem to have a decent story planned out before they start either.

Not really, but too many people think a "story" means there has to be like 6 hours of reading before you get to see a left tit.
