I finally decided to ditch my 10 year old Mac. I have purchased a PC, and when my monitors get here I will start to move my stuff over to the PC. My Ren'Py games are all Mac versions. I believe there is a way to play them on a PC in a RenPy terminal. Currently, I have no clue how that works. Also the game saves on a Mac are not stored in the game folder. So anyone know how to handle those files. I am hoping I will not have to download PC versions of all these games and start the play over.

I have a ton of external drives that I will use for the moves. So that part I get, my current Externals are not PC formatted but I will move these files to disk that are PC formatted.

I am mainly concerned about my games.

Also anyone have suggestions on PC apps and virus software.
Thank you

For RenPy games you can delete the lib and renpy folders. Then view the script_version.txt file in the game folder. It will tell you what version of RenPy it is expecting (example: "(7, 3, 5)" means RenPy version 7.3.5). You can copy everything (including the exe, don't worry about the file name) except the game folder from a Windows RenPy game with same version.

PC save files are saved in both the game folder and under appdata - roaming - renpy. So if a mac does something similar then you can find that folder that it stores them all in and move them to the renpy save folder. When you bring the game up the saves should show up.

Malwarebytes is good.

avoid that, antiviruses are bullshit, just use windows security no need for bloatware.
if you are unsure about something, windows 11 you can enable sandbox mode drop the zip in it and run it make sure its clean, if u need help on this just dm me on discord.

I had trouble with Malwarebytes, the Mac version. Ended up with 13 viruses, which I caught by running AFix Me Stick. Some of my RenPy games were infected, and would not load. Had to delete all old copies and save of the games that were corrupted. So, thank you but no thank you.

I would recommend Linux if you don't need to depend on certain software. Linux Mint Cinnamon is a fine choice for someone new to Linux. Also Linux has necessities that are free and open-source.
You can also download and use the Ren'py SDK for Linux as well. I've been using Linux for making games.

Sorry, I never replied to your post. My reason is I read the items you linked and search for more data. The concepts, I can agree with in theory. But they appear to me to be similar to programming and console use. The computer world flew past me in the early decade of the 2010s. And so Linux seems to overwhelm me.

I used to work as a trainer for a software company in the 1990s. So I am not proud of my computer smarts today.

But thank you for presenting me with a great overview set of writings. And I had been curious about Linux for years. Now I know a little bit more than I did before.

I agree with Voldy, Linux Mint is apparently very good. If you are going to get into windows anyways though, Windows 10 IOT LTSC edition should have support for around a decade or so. I don't know anything about Windows 11, though.
