For most games (and writers) it doesn't work, but I do enjoy some games where the premise is a bit silly to begin with. The idea is to create a story in a believable world, so any forced comedy in a serious story tends to fail spectacularly.
For me it's a really hard thing to balance. Story is essential, but the pacing and delivery need to be really good. If it's just walls of text I tend to start skipping here and there until I miss most of the story. My bad, I know, but most of the games aren't really that well written. But...
