    Graphics. You can ignore a bad story if the art is good, but it's harder to ignore bad art, even if the story is good. At that point, you might as well be playing a text game.

    Badly thought out sandboxes because you can get stuck or miss scenes due to a random stat or event. Forced puzzles also suck: "Hey I know we're in the middle of a date but you need to do this sliding tile puzzle before we can move on to the next scene"

    VNs. Sometimes in sandboxes progress is hidden behind some random stat or time of day. I think it can be done well but it rarely happens.
