Backward compatibility seems mandatory nowadays. The backlash from not having it is too strong. That's also one of many reason why console architecture is much closer to PC now. Figured out an issue an hour ago with my TV : when it's turned off, it cannot be turned back on if a certain HDMI is plugged in.
