Not really and I usually don't read them. I have seen bad stories with good ratings and good stories with lower ratings. How long is too long for a game to have an update...?
Depends on the game. For a well written VN with great graphics and a lot of material in each release, it can take a little longer, especially if the developer is telling people what's going on and if they have carried through in the past.
