A good style and high quality art can really elevate a piece of media but if the writing is absolutely dreadful then it's kind of wasted. A well written thing can stick with you long after you're done with it but a bad one won't unless it's so bad it's good.
I think it's because it's so bizarre to people why people would like it AND how prevalent it is in the genre despite it's seeming nicheness. I don't like it personally but I understand why someone might.
The thing is, what one person considers lucky another might consider unlucky. That being said you can't experimentally prove everything is planned so it's effectively not true.
From what little experience I have it's much harder to make a 3D asset than to make a 2D asset, so in an "industry" like the h-game industry where it's usually a solo developer 2D generally ends up being higher quality. There are exceptions of course but from my experience 2D is generally higher...
