Idk if this has been talked about yet or not but not even just on this site on some of the others I check like f95 and fap nation there have been so many new 0.1 games come out that never see an update again. Just wondering what has been goin on with that if more are just practicing making a small game/demo then releasing it fun or if theres gonna be any hope for some of them because some do look very promising.
 
A lot of this can be chalked down to a few things:
  1. The enthusiasm of development did not survive past the first release (most common)
  2. Negative feedback immediately scare away developer
  3. Lack of positive feedback meaning there is no encouragement to continue
  4. Not making money so they hurdle of early development wasn't worthwhile
But that's just a few possible scenarios.
 
5. Starting a bunch of routes in 0.1 is nice for the players, but the devs need to continue all of them and might realize the workload they started too late
 
Yeah. I'm pretty sure if I ever made one, I'd be burnt out by the time I'd worked two hours on it after the 0.1 and it would slowly die after I *intend* to work on it less and less each day until I finally forget everything anyway. So I get that.

I'm not the biggest fan of studios/people with two games already slow on updates, starting on their third, however. Feels too much like a cash grab sometimes.
 
As to support, who in their right mind would support a 0.1 made by someone who hasn't already finished a game or 2?
 
There are also some black sheeps around, a 0.1 is all it needs to get people to pay money, instead of making a 0.2 they just make another 0.1 and another one after that...
Slow burns are the safer bet here since most supporters tend to threw their money at adult content ^^
 
A really good 0.1 is worth following -- but - if it's not? Not gonna bother with Number 0.2. I REALLY hate it when a game I liked - like Project Sage - gets abandoned, but haphazard 0.1s are not far behind. I think that some Devs just throw things at the wall and hope it takes off.
 
I tend not to play new games as I have no idea about content, update schedule, commitment to finish, etc...
If I check one out I'll probably just ignore it until it's finished or abandoned, unless meaningful updates come regularly enough to make playing each update a viable option. It needs to come often enough you won't lose connection with the story and characters and be large enough to warrant the probably massive download and to not give you the feeling you played a 10 min update without much happening.

And if a good one ends op abandoned I can only hope someone else might be inspired to make a new version of it.
 
I learned a LONG time ago to never, ever, ever under any circumstances give a cent to a game until it has sex scenes of the sort not ending in "job." Otherwise you could end up wasting on a blueball snoozefest. Why would anyone play a game to be bored? You can watch paint dry/grass grow or such.
 
Most people looking to start a game try to build skill at rendering or coding or writing- hopefully all three- or find someone better than them at one or more of those things.

But in my opinion the #1 skill that amateur devs tend to lack is project management. Huge numbers of them get a great idea, start to work on it, release a 0.0001, and then realize this is gonna be way more work than they envisioned and give up. Or they don't formally quit but slip way behind in whatever they're working on and are just never heard from again.

But that's okay. Take any given thing and 90+% of people really aren't good at it at all, 9% are competent and no more, and maybe 1% are really awesome at it. A huge flood of new devs never get past the first release, but a few of them keep at it and turn into beloved and reliable creators.
 
Unless there is something about the basic story premise that really catches my attention, I avoid 0.1 versions of VNs. OTOH, if there are already a couple of updates, I will have a look, as this means that the Dev is more invested in their own efforts, and not just putting a toe in the water.
 
I wish those devs who abandoned a 0.1 game could put it out there to other people who want to continue it. Every once and a while I see game where I go, hey that had promise and I wish it could keep going
 
I just look at it as a demo to see if people would be interested. I normally dont play until 0.3 of a game
 
Only a small fraction will make it to 0.2. Make some nice renders and a scene or two, make money off that, go spend money.
 
My take on this is that most devs release 0.1 versions of games as sort of demo. If it gets a lot of attention the continue ... else well it goes into oblivion
 
I've seen a few devs that just abandon a project in favor of another. Dandyboy a good example, unfinished game and says it's due to finances then announces an entirely new project that they're going to work on instead
 
Thing is, who the fuck is going to support something that early? Usually it's another couple releases before there's anything good and too many get abandoned soon. Only way would be something new from one you already support, or it's throwing money away.
 
I support after period of time when dev proves that he's dedicated to making a game further. It helps to filter out lot of people who are in it purely for money or lack motivation or have bad work ethics.
Although if the game is really damn good for an update, I personally sub to them too. Really depends.
Game development and art is fickle. Many things change.

You can also have developers trying to please the general audience but in doing so alienate their own project and story. Then dropping the entire thing.
You also have technical advancements. Like introduction of AI tools for 2D game devs.
Or new generation of DAZ models.

Lot of factors that contribute to many unfinished games. In the end, most resilient devs climb on top.
 
you'll find that in game development, as well as in many various aspects of life, it is a lot easier to start something, than it is to follow through.
